Versitech Limited: Our Business Arm

Versitech Limited ("港大科橋有限公司") is the commercial arm of HKU. It was established in 1994 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the University and is incorporated as a non-profit company with prominent business people on its Board of Management. Versitech negotiates, executes and manages commercial business contracts and agreements on behalf of the University.


  • Undertake the commercialisation of HKU innovations and technologies through licensing, the creation of start-ups or collaboration.
  • Engage in contract research and consulting in conjunction with HKU researchers. This work is aimed at serving business and community needs.

Dr. Allan Wong Chi Yun (Chairman)

Dr. Allan Wong, JP, co-founded VTech in 1976 with the vision of designing innovative electronics products for consumers around the world.

A technology enthusiast, Allan is an electrical and computer engineer by training with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Hong Kong. He also holds a Master of Science degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Wisconsin and an honorary degree of Doctor of Technology from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Under Allan's leadership, VTech has become one of the world's largest suppliers of cordless telephones and a leading supplier of electronic learning products. Allan also pioneered the development of VTech's China-based manufacturing facilities and the creation of a strong brand platform and distribution network in North America, Europe and Asia.

In October 2003, Dr. Wong was awarded the Silver Bauhinia Star (SBS) from the Hong Kong SAR Government for his significant contribution in promoting Hong Kong's industrial and technological development, as well as promoting Hong Kong as a centre of innovation and technology.

Dr. Wong is the Chairman of the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute and a member of the Council of Advisors on Innovation and Technology. He is a council member of the University of Hong Kong, an independent non-executive director of the Bank of East Asia Ltd, China-Hongkong Photo Products Holdings Ltd and Li & Fung Ltd.

Professor Peter Mathieson (Vice Chancellor and President)

Professor Peter Mathieson is the fifteenth President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong, and assumed office in April 2014.

Peter Mathieson was born and educated in the United Kingdom. He attended a state grammar school in Penzance, Cornwall, becoming Head Boy in 1977. He was awarded an unconditional offer of a place to read Medicine at the London Hospital Medical College in 1978 and qualified from the University of London with First Class Honours in 1983. After junior medical posts in London, he obtained a research training fellowship from the Medical Research Council (MRC) to study at the University of Cambridge. He was awarded a PhD by the University of Cambridge in 1992.

He then became Director of Studies for Clinical Medicine at Christ’s College, Cambridge. After a further MRC fellowship he moved to Bristol in 1995 as the foundation Professor of Renal Medicine at the University of Bristol and Honorary Consultant Nephrologist, North Bristol NHS Trust. 

Peter was elected Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 1999. Between 2003 and 2007 he chaired the Research Grants Committee of Kidney Research UK. He was a member of the Renal Association Clinical Trials committee from 1996 to 2007 and Chairman between 2000 and 2003. In 2007 he was elected as President of the Renal Association (the youngest in its history) in a competitive election by the membership and also became Head of the University Department of Clinical Science at North Bristol. In the same year he was appointed as Director of Research & Development for the North Bristol NHS Trust. He served the full three year term as President of the Renal Association and remained a Trustee for a further two years as Immediate Past-President.

In 2008 Peter was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Bristol. Following the formation of Bristol Health Partners, Peter was appointed as the founding Director in May 2012, a role which he undertook alongside the role of Dean.

Professor Andy T S Hor (Vice-President and Pro Vice Chancellor - Research)

Born & bred in Hong Kong and a naturalized Singaporean, Professor Andy Hor graduated from Imperial College (London) (B.Sc.(Hon)) and Oxford University (D.Phil.), with D.Sc.(London), specializing in organometallic chemistry, materials and catalysis. After his postdoctoral stint in Yale University, he started his academic career in the National University of Singapore (NUS), and became a full professor at age 44 – very rare in the 1990s'. He was among the pioneering batch of Fellows of the Teaching Academy of NUS.

In NUS, he took up different management positions such as Head of Chemistry, Vice Dean (Academic) of Science, Senior Advisory committee member of the NUS Graduate School, Science Secretariat of the "Core Curriculum" (which eventually evolved into the liberal arts education of Yale-NUS today). He is Concurrent Professor of Fudan University and Senior Fellow of the Agency for Science, Technology & Research (A*STAR). His fellowship includes Humboldt (Muenchen & Muenster), Commonwealth (Liverpool), ASAIHL (HKU & HKCU), Jackson Memorial (Griffith), Anthony Mason (New South Wales), Wilsmour (Melbourne), JSPS (Tokyo & Hokkaido) etc. He was among the earlier recipients of the National Young Scientist & Engineer award, Outstanding Educator Award and numerous teaching and research awards of NUS as well as the ASEAN (Science) Achievement award.

In 2010, He took up full-time secondment as the Executive Director of the Institute of Materials Research & Engineering (IMRE) of A*STAR of Singapore. The mission of A*STAR is to create and capture economic and social values through impactful science and innovative technologies. Within 5 years, IMRE won every major award in A*STAR, including Patent Power, Outstanding Publication, STAR Employee, Scientist-Entrepreneur, Most Inspiring Mentor, Go-the-Extra-Mile, STAR Innovation etc. In 2014, IMRE broke an institution record of ~480 publications with >16,000 citations, and >330 active patents with ~18% licensing success. In A*STAR, he undertook various responsibilities such as member of the Management Committee of the Joint Council Office, Chair of the Public Service Funding grant panel, Member of the Research Ethics & Conduct Committee Ethic, Advisor of Early Career Researchers, Founding Chair of the Young Scientist Award etc. His other professional services include Board Member of the Singapore Science Centre, Chair of the national Advisory Committee of Hazardous Substances & Toxic Waste, Chair of the national working group in nanotechnology, President of Jury of the Singapore L’Oréal Women in Science Award, Member of the National Science Award panel, etc. He was active in various evaluation and advisory committees of the National Research Foundation set up under the Prime Minister’s Office.

Professor Hor is the Fellow of the Singapore National Academy of Science (SNAS), Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK) (FRSC), President & Fellow of the Singapore National Institute of Chemistry (SNIC), and President of the Federation of the Asian Chemical Societies (FACS). By Aug 2015, he has published ~380 international papers, filed patents in areas like nanostructures and battery materials, and delivered numerous plenary, keynote and invited lectures in various international, regional and local meetings. He chaired the 15th Asian Chemical Congress (ACC-15) in 2013, 41st International Coordination Chemistry Conference (ICCC-41) in 2014, Golden Jubilee Chemistry Conference in Singapore in 2015, and numerous others. He is on the international/advisory board of the Chemistry – an Asian Journal (VCH-Wiley), Dalton Transactions (RSC), Inorganic Chemistry Frontiers (RSC) and Inorganica Chimica Acta (Elsevier), and Associate Editor of the Australian Journal of Chemistry (CSIRO) and Editor of the Journal of Molecular & Engineering Materials (WS).

He is married with three daughters named 賀嘉研 ("good research"), 賀惠研 ("beneficial research") & 賀芷研 ("research in nature, or natural product")  that epitomise Professor Hor's belief and doctrines in research.

Professor Victor O.K. Li

Professor Li was born in Hong Kong in 1954. He received his Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, Electrical Engineer, and Doctor of Science degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1977, 1979, 1980, and 1981, respectively.

He joined the University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles, California, USA, in February 1981, and became Professor of Electrical Engineering and Director of the USC Communication Sciences Institute. Since September 1997, he has been with the University of Hong Kong (HKU), where he is Chair Professor of Information Engineering at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He is also a director of Sunevision Holdings Ltd., iSSL Holdings Ltd., mCommerce Online Ltd., and IAR Ltd., and he serves on the advisory board of various technology companies. Professor Li was the Managing Director of Versitech Ltd from September 1997 to June 2004. His research interest is in information technologies, including high-speed communication networks, wireless networks, and distributed multimedia systems. Professor Li chairs various committees, workshops, and international conferences. He has given distinguished lectures and keynote addresses, and has consulted at various organizations around the world. He also serves on government panels, giving advice on the development of information technology and on technology transfer.

Professor Li has received numerous awards, including the PRC Ministry of Education Changjiang Chair Professorship at Tsinghua University, the UK Royal Academy of Engineering Senior Visiting Fellowship in Communications, the Outstanding Researcher Award of HKU, the Outstanding Research Student Supervisor Award of HKU, the Croucher Foundation Senior Research Fellowship, and the Bronze Bauhinia Star, Government of HKSAR, China.  He is a Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences, the IEEE, the HKIE and the IAE.

Dr. KIM Shin Cheul (Managing Director)

Dr. KIM Shin Cheul has the strong track records on technology commercialization and investment. He served as a senior vice president in Exploit Technologies Pte Ltd (ETPL), a commercialization arm of Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) Singapore. He’s key role was the strategic IP portfolio management, early identification of the technologies with commercial potential, establishing commercialization strategy, incubating them through collaboration and Gap funding project, and commercializing them. He has led and supervised more than 25 commercialization projects with the budget of about S$50m and concluded more than 70 licenses. In recognition of his achievement, he received “Dedicated Service Award” in 2012. Over all, he involved in establishing 12 start-ups mainly in materials and electronics industries including their biomedical applications with the total investment of more than US$150m.

He was a founding member of NESS Display Co Ltd (2000) in Korea which commercialized OLED display in 2002 with the strength of 350 patents/patent applications. He invented the linear evaporation source for organic materials and commercially deployed it for the first time in the world. He led the team to develop OLED production tool, and established two OLED production lines in Korea and Singapore. He also has a strong operation experience; he worked as Production manager in NESS Display Co Ltd. (2002) and Operation director (2004), and manufacturing managing director (2005) in NESS Display Singapore Pte Ltd.

He has been very active to share his knowledge and experiences too. He was a lecturer for ETPL Master Class on "Technology Commercialisation and Research Collaboration" (2011~2012) and "Traineeship for Technology Transfer Management Class" organized by Singapore Workforce Development Agency and ETPL (2010~2011). He also served for various organization as an advisor and director. He was a member of advisory board for Honghap valley in Seoul, Osong Bio-Cluster in Korea, and a member of review committee for various grants including SPRING Singapore’s Technology Enterprise Commercialization Scheme(TECS). He also served as a director of Tera Barrier Film Pte Ltd, a member of materials research society of Singapore and national advisory board of International Conference on Materials for Advanced Technologies.

He received the Ph.D from the Institute for physics and applied physics in Yonsei University in Korea and lectured in several universities. He published more than 20 journal and conference papers and filed 15 patent applications.

Ms. Sara Lo

Sara is the Director of Finance of the University of Hong Kong.  She is a qualified accountant and has extensive experience in University finance for about 20 years overseeing annual budgets over HK$5 billion and investment portfolio of about HK$12 billion.  She started her career in one of the big four audit firms for several years before joining the University.

Sara obtained her first degree in Social Sciences from HKU, and also completed an EMBA program offered by the University of Hong Kong Business School jointly with Columbia Business School and London Business School.  She is a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants and of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants.

Mr. K.O. Chia

Mr. K O Chia is Director of Grace Financial Ltd., a Hong Kong multi-family office where he focuses on direct investments and private equity investment program. He brings 30-plus years of diverse experience as U.S.-Asia venture capitalist, entrepreneurial journey with a successful telecom start-up and extensive corporate operational management with Hewlett-Packard/Agilent and Apple across Asia, Europe and U.S. 

He also serves as President of Hong Kong Venture Capital & Private Equity Association (HKVCA); Advisory Member on the School of Continuing Studies at Chinese University of Hong Kong; and Board of Versitech, University of Hong Kong technology transfer company. Previously he had served as Chairman of Advisory Committee, College of International Education at Hong Kong Baptist University; Board member of Cyberport Management, a HK government’s technology hub; and Committee Member of HKSAR government’s Community Investment & Inclusion Fund (CIIF) to seed social capital projects for community revival.

His current passion is in impact investments where he attempts to bring together venture capital investment discipline with an entrepreneurial approach to projects for double bottom line and community sustainability to alleviate systemic poverty.

He holds an MBA from Strathclyde Business School, Scotland; post graduate Diploma in Management Studies from Edinburgh Napier University, Scotland and BEng (Hons) Electronics Engineering from Sheffield University, England. He is also a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institute of Directors; a GlobalScot; Independent Director of family philanthropy, Seeds Foundation Ltd.; and Trustee on the Edinburgh Napier University Hong Kong Scholarship Trust.

Dr. Frank C.W. Wan

After having finished his primary and secondary schools, Dr. Wan left his birthplace, Hong Kong, to pursue his undergraduate studies at the University of Waterloo in Canada. He then received intensive training in cancer research on National Cancer Institute of Canada Research Studentships at the Ontario Cancer Institute under the supervision of Professor Tak Mak of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Toronto.

He later changed his career to law. He completed his LL.B degree from the University of London, his PCLL at the University of Hong Kong with two distinctions and received Doctor of Juridical Science degree from the City University of Hong Kong.

With his background in biomedical sciences, he has, under the advice of Professor Tak Mak and his group, involved and worked with investors in Hong Kong and overseas to invest in biotech companies in USA and Canada since early 90's. He is a frequent speaker and commentator on issues relating to Biotechnology industry. He has served as an assessor of Small Entrepreneur Research Assistance Programme of Hong Kong Government since January 2004 and served on advisory panel of Life Science and Biotechnology of CityU's Applied Research Grant scheme. He has served as honorary legal advisor to a number of medical associations and was a former chairman of the Hong Kong Biotechnology Association Ltd.

Mr. Philip Y.H. Fan

Philip Yan Hok Fan was born in Hong Kong on September 5,1949. He attended La Salle Primary School and graduated from La Salle Secondary School before going to college in the United States. He studied at Stanford University and obtained a B.S. degree in Industrial Engineering and a M.S. degree in Operation Research. Subsequently, he was awarded a fellowship by M.I.T. and graduate from its Sloan School of Management with a Master degree in Management.

In 1976, he went to Nigeria, a West African country in the midst of an oil boom he was appointed General Manager of a steel mill company established by a consortium of Hong Kong industrialists. In a few years, he became Managing Director of a steel rolling mill which he co-founded with partners. He operated that business successfully for some time before returning to Hong Kong at the end of the Nigerian oil boom in 1983.

In 1984, he joined the Material Science Products Division of Pfizer Inc. as Area Manager. He was in charge of sales and marketing of its products in the P.R.C., Taiwan and Malaysia. Later, he became consultant to Pfizer Inc's Minerals Division; he was able to play a significant role in obtaining approvals for the establishment of a minerals joint venture in China.

In 1990, he took his family to Canada. After living in Vancouver for three years, he returned to Hong Kong to join CITIC Hong Kong(Holdings) Ltd. In October 1993. He was named to the Board of CITIC Pacific Ltd. As of January 1, 1994. As an Executive Director of CITIC Pacific Ltd, he was appointed Chairman of the Board to three of its industrial joint ventures in China and Director to a number of other P.R.C. joint ventures covering businesses like power generation, telecommunication, underwater road tunnel and property development.

After working at CITIC for four years, he jointed China Everbright International Ltd. In November 1997 as Executive Director and General Manager. The current business scope of China Everbright International includes industrial manufacturing, infrastructure investments, property development and construction through its investment in Kumagai Gumi (Hong Kong) Ltd.

Mr. Hailson Yu (Deputy Managing Director)

Mr. Yu started his career as an assistant engineer at Ampex Ferrotec Limited, Hong Kong, in 1979. In 1982, he was promoted to equipment maintenance and calibration laboratory manager. Later, he was in charge of the computer engineering group and systems engineering group, responsible for the product development programs and the setting up of the CAD center.

In 1987, Mr. Yu joined China International Trust and Investment Corporation Hong Kong (Holdings) Limited (CITIC) as the General Manager - Engineering / Research & Development. He was seconded to a joint venture company (a computer manufacturing company) as the Deputy Managing Director and he successfully turned around its business. Next he oversaw the CITIC USA Venture Capital Fund, and he successfully listed two of the start-up companies in NASDAQ and sold four other companies for a profit.

His last appointment with CITIC was as Consultant of the Oil and Gas Development and of the LPG Tank Terminal Port investment projects, in which he played a significant role in project feasibility study and economic analysis, contract negotiation, and the setting up of the corresponding project companies. He joined Versitech Limited as the Deputy Managing Director in February 1998.

Mr. Yu has a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, a Master of Arts in Arbitration and Dispute Resolution, a Post-graduate Certificate in Hong Kong Law and in Chinese Medicine, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Investment Management.

Mr. Yu is a Chartered Engineer. He is also a Fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE), the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb), and the Hong Kong Institute of Arbitrators (HKIArb).
