The Chief Executive visits HKU x Cyberport Fintech Nucleus

The Chief Executive, Mrs Carrie Lam; and the Chairman of Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited, Dr George Lam, visited HKUxCyberport Fintech Nucleus at Cyberport’s Smart Space Fintech on February 22, 2019.

During the visit, Mr Hailson Yu, Deputy Director of Technology Transfer Office, introduced HKU x Cyberport Fintech Nucleus to Mrs Lam and highlighted the latest HKU research and technology development in the FinTech area. Mrs Lam was pleased to see the contributions from HKU in supporting the rapid development of Fintech in the city.

HKU x Cyberport Fintech Nucleus is a platform for promoting HKU technologies and innovations in Fintech to the Cyberport Centre of Global FinTech Innovation. Fintech Nucleus provides live technology showcases developed by HKU start-ups for engaging with potential customers, and facilitates collaborations among HKU and other FinTech stakeholders in the region.

Since its inception in 2017, FinTech Nucleus has received hundreds of delegations from different part of the world and they were presented i) the cutting-edge HKU technologies for best supporting FinTech business; ii) HKU’s rapid-growing FinTech start-ups; and iii) HKU FinTech courses designed for financial institutions, private investors and government representatives, with the ultimate purpose of accelerating the adoption of financial and A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) technologies for better products and services.

HKU’s latest research and development in the FinTech area:
1. MPF Optimal Allocation (MPF OpAl)
A mobile app which provides statistical suggestions to MPF holders on how to re-allocate their investments in the fund. MPF OpAl aims to provide optimal allocation guidance to users to allow them to be well-prepared for retirement. 

This Smartbox SHIELD is a very unique cybersecurity technology developed by the HKU research lab Center for Information Security and Cryptography (CISC) to perform intelligent packet filtering in order to protect clients against DDoS attack and ensure their business are not being impacted.

3. Brain Investing Limited
An HKU FinTech start-up supported by Technology Start-up Support Scheme for Universities (TSSSU) of the Innovation and Technology Commission of the Government of HKSAR. Founded by professor and alumnus of HKU, Brain Investing provides an all-in-one Fintech solution with cutting-edge artificial intelligence technologies and helps investment companies and institutions achieve better performance with their AI strategy research and execution platforms.

4. HKU FinTech MOOC (Massive Open Online Course)
Introduction to FinTech is a six-week online course created by HKU along with collaborators SuperCharger, Cyberport, the Centre for Finance, Technology and Education (CFTE), UNSW Sydney, Microsoft and ACMI. About 34,000 learners from 190 countries enrolled in the course as of 2018. (website:
